Three days. 60 miles. More than $12,400 in donations. Three members from the Midwest/Troy Region Crestmark accomplished this and more through their recent participation in the Southeast Michigan Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure – a 3 day, 60 mile walk supporting the fight against breast cancer. The team – Sharmen McVay, Sherri Myers and Patty Oakes – raised $12,452 through bake sales, garage sales and various fundraising events.
Walking the 3 days were McVay and Myers, joined by McVay’s sister, Shelley Wyatt. On Friday, August 17 the team started off at Oakland Mall in Troy, walking 20 miles per day to the closing ceremony Sunday afternoon, August 19, at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn.
Each member participated or walked in honor of a loved one – and in hope for a cure.
The Michigan 3-Day raised more than $3.2 million — 75% of the funds go to breast cancer research and 25% will go to support local affiliates of the organization. This was the ninth year Susan G. Komen held the event in Michigan, and more than 1,100 walkers participated.
The Crestmark team is already signed up and recruiting additional members for next year’s walk, which is scheduled for August 16-18, 2013. Get your walking shoes ready!
